All Weather Terminal cements Port of Kokkola's Finnish First
Europe's largest All Weather Terminal (AWT) has been inaugurated
at The
Port of Kokkola in Western Finland, ranked among the country's
busiest ports and one of the largest along the Gulf of Bothnia.
The new AWT constructed at a cost of €20m ($26.4m)
and the first such facility in Scandinavia was officially
opened at a gala ceremony on January 31, 2005 by Finland's transport
Minister Leena Luhtanen (view
image). The inauguration was attended by local dignitaries,
port customers and port staff along with journalists from the Finnish
and international media.
At 132m long, 62m wide and 35m high, the AWT can receive, load
and discharge vessels up to 9500dwt at its enclosed dock area which
is 125m in length and 25m wide. The terminal is primarily designed
to cater for weather-sensitive cargoes (view
6MB Quicktime movie) timber, metals and general cargo
that make up a high proportion of traffic through Kokkola.
It forms part of a pan-European AWT network which also includes
the Waterland
Terminal at the Port
of Amsterdam.
